This is a farm that was started by an old man named Juan, about 40 years ago. At a time when there were big companies coming to Guatemala to clear-cut forests and plant “rubber trees,” which have little value to the local ecosystem, he stood for something different, and decided to grow Cacao instead.
Without even knowing the recently popularized term, Permaculture, he knew what plants to mix with the understory and overstory in order to make for a healthy earth and ecosystem for the flora and fauna alike. This also creates multiple revenue streams to the local community and keeps things organic, like all of our farms.
Juan has been steadily growing the farm and the old-growth trees above it and has, since employed many many people throughout the entire village. Las Victorias is also at the foot of volcanoes near the coast of Guatemala.
